Today I’m taking a day off to tailor a few garments for friends. I’m also taking some time to play around with some of the leftover fabrics from my Fall 09 collection, to see what else I can do with them. Everyone seems to love the fringe necklaces I’ve been making so I thought I’d start from there and make a ruffle version with some leftover fabric.
I started with a long, raw edge rectangular strip of fabric, stitched it down the middle, gathered it, then sewed it onto a zipper base, and finally hand tacked it down so everything stays in place. I’m happy with the prototype, and will be posting a version on my etsy shop later this weekend when I’ve added a few finishing touches.
The purpose of this blog is to allow everyone some insight into one clothing designer’s path from conception to final product, with the final goal being a show during NY fashion week. That designer is me. Hello, I am pleased to meet you.
Admittedly I have started blogging a little late in the season, so I am going to post several steps at once in order to catch you up with where I’m actually at in my progress. I usually begin designing a collection with a source of inspiration. I never seek out that inspiration, it usually finds me in one form or another. In April of this year I went to visit a good friend in London. During my trip I saw an exhibition at the Tate Modern called Rodchenko & Popova: Defining Constructivism. I immediately related to the structure, colour choices and philosophies emulated by the artists’ work. I returned to NY wanting to research them further and try to adapt the their perspective to my work in Brooklyn in 2009.
This collection will be a loose study of their work, updated by modern day reality. The video below discusses highlights from the show in London.
