No Waste Fashion

If you read a little bit about my Spring 2010 collection, you’ll have learned that by cutting all my garments from square shaped pattern pieces, I was also intending to cut down on fabric waste.  In fact my intention was to eliminate it all together.  By using the square shape for the patterns, however, I likely used more fabric than necessary, thus contradicting my original plan.

Since then I have been researching no waste pattern making and garment production and have come to the realization that not only is it a very limiting process, but also a very time consuming one that requires a lot of passion.  I sense a challenge.

I will be meeting with one of the original pioneers of this process, Timo Rissanen, mainly to have a drink and welcome him to the NY fashion community, but also to pick his brains (I hope you’re ready for a lot of questions, Timo!).  A perfect example of the passion I am referring to can be seen in Mark Liu’s work here.  While my work will probably never be this feminine and lovely, I hope to learn from it and translate it into applicable lessons for Study.

My conviction that this trend will become a necessary part of the future of fashion was only reinforced further last week when I read about that ridiculous amount of waste by some stores in NY (and I’m assuming around the world as well).  While I could gone on ranting about how disgusted I am by this behaviour, instead I’ll do my best to counteract bad habits and hope that people start paying attention.

Also, I apologize for the long absence in my blogging. If I do have any readers left, Happy New Year to you all.  I promise I will have more to share with you this year.
