The reason it all started.
Earlier this Spring I lectured a third year FIT class on sustainability. After the lecture one of the students, Julianne Margiotta, contacted me about an internship over the Summer. Her design project for the class, which I critiqued two weeks after the lecture, was creative, well-edited and well thought out. One of her styles was a draped pant that I immediately loved. I told her then and there that if she ever made the pant, I wanted one.
I left the class impressed by the caliber of the work done by the students. And a little sad that designs for beautiful sustainable clothing that would never be realized and were doomed to remain on paper. That’s when the idea for Study Hall started to germinate in my mind. It wasn’t until a few months later, when the interns started working for me, that I fully outlined their Summer project. But it all started with one great pair of pants that I (selfishly) wanted to see come to life.
The picture above is of the final pant. It took 6 months to create them – if you count back to the day in March when I saw them on Julianne’s project board – and they are ready. The interns shoot their lookbooks this Saturday so samples are slowly starting to trickle into the studio from the sample room. This is a very exciting week!

Do you think you’ll do Study Hall again?
I WANT THOSE PANTS TOO! Thank goodness they’re making the final cut
Yes, I think I’ll definitely do Study Hall again. In fact, I have been talking about doing something even more interesting with a friend / fellow designer. More details to follow in October!
Such a fantastic initiative! Too many times interns fetch coffee and sweep the floor and learn very little. Your support of their creativity and learning is inspiring! Keep it up.
