This Wednesday, March 16th, beloved fundraising site Global Giving partners with Awamaki Lab to match all donations by 30%!  Ten dollars goes a long way to improve the lives of fledgling artisans and female business entrepreneurs in Ollantaytambo, Peru.  An additional 30 cents to every dollar makes an even greater impact.

Awamaki Lab applies design-led business solutions to harness the talents and capabilities of women in Ollantaytambo; supporting a sewing-cooperative that will make an important contribution to the fragile local economy in the face of fluctuating tourism.

So click the link tomorrow and see how your money can make a difference in someone’s life and help create sustainable industry in Peru.

(on a side note, after a chat with Awamaki Lab  founder Annie Milican yesterday, I’m thinking about going down to Peru myself to visit the weavers and work with the new knitting co-op for Fall 2012.  More on that later!)

Two unexpected encounters this evening reminded me that despite all the trials and tribulations of this job, I do what I do because I love it, because it’s what I’m passionate about, and because I can’t imagine being as happy doing anything else. For that I’m eternally grateful.  And yes, I do realize that I am part of a very elite group of people who can say that about their careers.

More importantly I met a potential kindred spirit in an unexpected place.  I believe great things are to come of this meeting.  I’ll follow up on that soon.  In the meantime… expect only greatness.

About Tara
Tara St James is the owner and head designer for the New York-based clothing label Study, a high-concept brand primarily produced in New York City. St James was born and raised in Montreal, Canada but has lived and worked in New York since 2004, she now calls Brooklyn home. Formerly the creative director of Covet, a mainstream eco-friendly sportswear collection for men and women, Tara left to start Study in September 2009. Spring 2011 will be Study’s third collection; it is inspired by restrictions, using hand-dyed ikat silks and examines no-waste patternmaking. Tara is hoping to add more accessories, expand fabric development and hopefully add a men’s line in the near future. She also works with local artisans in India to create very limited edition runs of hand-woven textiles. She is looking to expand this specialized production to other artisans around the world.
